Complete Spa Maintenance Guide
A complete guide to routine spa maintenance, including testing, sanitizer, pH, alkalinity, filter cleaning, draining, refilling, and troubleshooting.
The basic routine
Spa maintenance is mostly consistency. Test often, make small adjustments, keep filters clean, and drain before water becomes difficult to balance. Warm water and small volume make hot tubs less forgiving than pools.
Before each soak
- Check that water is clear.
- Verify sanitizer is in range.
- Look for foam, odor, residue, or cloudy water.
- Confirm water level is above the jets.
Weekly maintenance
- Test sanitizer, pH, and total alkalinity.
- Rinse filters with clean water.
- Wipe the waterline.
- Shock or oxidize if your product system calls for it.
- Check calcium hardness and other slow-moving readings as needed.
Monthly maintenance
- Deep clean filters according to label instructions.
- Inspect the cover for waterlogging or damage.
- Check jets, pillows, and visible plumbing for buildup.
- Review salt, borate, stabilizer, TDS, or saturation index if relevant.
When to drain and refill
Drain timing depends on bather load, water volume, products used, and TDS. If water foams, smells, clouds quickly, or becomes hard to balance even after filter cleaning, fresh water may be the best fix.
Do not use the spa if sanitizer is zero, water is cloudy, or you cannot clearly see the bottom.
